Much of urban Niagara sits on the Haldimand Clay Plain. The excavated backfill around every basement forms a bowl that funnels roof water straight at the foundation, which is why two cheap habits carry so much weight here: downspouts run at least six feet out, and ground that falls about six inches over the first ten.
